Grooming Basics: How Often Should You Brush Your Pet?

Regular brushing keeps your pet's coat tidy, cuts down on loose hair around the house and gives you a chance to check for lumps, bumps or skin changes.

How often should you brush?

It depends on the coat. As a general guide, short-haired pets do well with a brush once or twice a week, while long-haired or thick-coated pets often need brushing most days to prevent tangles. During heavy shedding seasons, you may want to brush more often. Your groomer or veterinarian can recommend a routine for your pet.

Start slow and keep it positive

Begin with short sessions of a few minutes, use gentle strokes in the direction of the fur and reward your pet afterwards. Pets that enjoy brushing are much easier to groom for life.

Pick the right tool

  • For long coats and tangles, a comb with rounded tips such as our Stainless Steel Pet Grooming Comb glides through fur, and the one-click button clears the hair for you.
  • For a gentler, calmer session, try the 3-in-1 Steam Pet Brush, which adds a fine mist and soft massage bristles.

Be gentle around sensitive areas

Avoid pulling on knots. Work them out slowly, and stop if your pet seems uncomfortable. If you notice redness, sores or constant scratching, check with your veterinarian.
